Ukraine, firms sign deal to solve Chernobyl ills
http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSL1771862820070917

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine signed deals with Western firms on Monday to build a new arch-shaped shelter to encase the wrecked fourth reactor at the Chernobyl power plant, site of the world's worst nuclear accident, and to store spent nuclear fuel.

With President Viktor Yushchenko looking on, the head of the now-decommissioned station signed a deal with the French-led Novarka consortium to erect the new shelter. The project is due to be completed over four to five years and cost $1.39 billion.

A second deal was signed with U.S.-based Holtec International to build a facility to house spent fuel from the station's other three reactors. A total of 285 million euros ($396 million) has so far been allocated for that project.

"We are talking about a unique project for this planet. The danger linked to the site of the accident is not confined to Ukraine's borders," Yushchenko told ceremony participants.

1. interesting comments in the LBN thread: "I knew a junkie who worked...at the San Onofre plant"
Who is taking care of business at your local nuclear power plant?

"I knew a junkie who worked as a "jumper" installing sleeves in reactor cooling systems at the San Onofre plant here in Cali. He had three different IDs so he could expose himself to triple the maximum amount of radiation allowed by federal law"

"The pay was pretty good - About $75 for a two-hour day
So my friend could get about $225 by working as three different people."

"He murdered someone in about 1987, got out nine years later"

2. And the damage done by the alleged junkie compares to William Hazelton how?
You read a post on a website about someone who says he knew a junkie at San Onofre, and of course you just have to repeat it.

Of course, you cannot demonstrate a single person who was injured by this alleged junkie.

You couldn't care less how many people are killed in accidents each year - they number in the tens of thousands - by dangerous fossil fuel vehicles.

Neither could you care less that one doesn't need a stupid little whispering campaign to know who Joseph Hazelton was. We can all look it up. http://www.alaskareport.com/z45631.htm

There is NOT ONE, zero, anti-nukes who would dream of dragging up Joseph Hazelton and the fact that drug induced stupors connected with dangerous fossil fuels kill regularly and constantly, most because of the low mass density of fossil fuels when compared to uranium.

In general the anti-nuke industry, drunk on Walmart money, and Chevron money and probably Exxon money too, couldn't care less about dangerous fossil fuels. Only nuclear energy must be immune from innuendo and whispering campaigns. The dangerous fossil fuel industry on the other hand can fuck up in the open and introduce not a whimper of protest from the anti-nuke industry, because the anti-nuke industry couldn't care less.
