Neighborhood awakes to sounds of moose calf killing
It looks like people building up and encroaching on wildlife habitat are getting a first hand lesson in life in the wild. It sounds like some will be seeing therapists soon to "stop the screaming sounds."

Neighborhood awakes to sounds of moose calf killing

GRIZZLY: Gruesome attack shocks residents as cow attempts to charge, then leaves baby.

By MEGAN HOLLAND
Anchorage Daily News

(Published: June 24, 2004)

Sheri Boggs woke up around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to the most chilling scream she had ever heard.

She jumped out of bed and ran to the window expecting to see a woman being attacked -- but instead saw a brown bear shredding a moose calf on the pavement of her Eagle River driveway.

"I know that's what bears do," Boggs said. "But they don't do it in your driveway."
---------------------------------------------------------

"For about half an hour that little baby just whimpered and cried, and it was just heartbreaking," said Robley, who said the sound echoed through the neighborhood in the still of the night.

"It sounded like someone was getting murdered. It was just horrible," said Amanda Gallagher, who lives across the street from the Boggses. "I just can't get that sound out of my head."

1. Welcome to life in the food chain, Sheri!
Was she under the impression that Mark Trail was going to pop by and stop that horrible predation?

Was she unaware that moose, bears and pretty much every other critter known to man wander into Anchorage on a regular basis?

Does she know that rabbits also scream when your cat catches them?

3. Poor Baby!
Do you suppose that woman thinks about where her steaks and hamburgers come from? Think she will now?

"food chain", but this would disturb me to no end. Knowing myself I would have tried to intervene in defiance of common sense (no lectures please). I don't understand why it took a half an hour to kill the poor thing, I wouldn't have been able to just stand there (again defying my common sense).

5. Not to be too brutal but ...
... the bear's aim is to disable its prey then start eating, not to
humanely kill it. The calf would have still been alive when the bear
started ... and only died later from blood loss or subsequent wounds.

Glad I wasn't there.

7. I thought that is what
housecats do. Other animals I thought killed as quickly as possible, mainly to avoid injury to itself or the animals escape. I've always had a problem understanding how a loving and merciful Creator would make a universe that depends on the suffering and death of innocents in order to survive. I STILL do and no amount of searching can explain it to me. It is always there in the back of my mind, puzzling me and giving me doubt, does anyone have any insight into my dilemma?

6. Y'all want to hear a truly errie animal scream...
then you need to hear a bobcat. Their call sounds something like a woman in serious trouble. When you hear one in the woods after dark, it will send a chill up your spine even if you realize the source of it.
