Britain Bracing For Torrential Rains This Weekend - Reuters
LONDON - Torrential rain will sweep across Britain from Friday, bringing the risk of more floods, dangerous roads and washed-out sporting events, forecasters said on Wednesday. The Met Office said thunderstorms will dump 60-90mm (2.3 to 3.5 inches) of rain on parts of the country between Friday night and Saturday lunchtime.

It issued severe weather warnings for the whole of England and parts Scotland, the latest in a rain-soaked summer. The south and east will be most at risk when a low pressure system from the North Sea hits warm air over the land. "Moisture plus heat equals lots of rain," said a Met Office spokesman. "It has been a very unsettled spell."

The latest downpours threaten the England cricket team's Test match against India at Lord's, dozens of pre-season friendly football matches and a series of race meetings.

However, the Open at Carnoustie in northeast Scotland looks set to miss the worst of the weather.
