GOP Block Tax Hikes for Oil Companies

Thursday June 21, 2007 6:01 PM

By H. JOSEF HEBERT

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Republicans blocked a $32 billion
package of tax breaks for renewable energy Thursday that
would have been financed mostly by new taxes on major oil
companies.

Democrats came three votes short of overcoming a threatened
GOP filibuster that was keeping the measure from being
attached to a broader energy bill. Republican senators argued
that the nearly $29 billion in additional taxes on major oil
companies would have lead to reduced production and higher
gasoline prices.

3. I just heard that a cloture vote failed.
This means the GOP is filibustering. I just got off the phone with my senator's offices. It took a while to get through but I asked first how my senator voted on cloture. I already had a good idea they voted against it. When I was told that was the case I told them we have waited too long for an energy plan from this administration and I urged in no uncertain terms to support this bill.

This thing is close and we must speak up. We can exert enough pressure to tip this thing over. When a politician knows what he or she has done is unpopular with enough people their own political survival becomes more important than protecting a special interest group.

4. WHERE'S THE MEDIA
When the democrats dared, to even threaten to stop a republican bill from coming to vote the news media and corporate and cable TV beat it to death. Of all the bills the republicans have blocked, bills to benefit the American public, and not corporation, not one word is ever printed to released to the public.
