Toyota picks Indonesia as global production base

Jakarta - Indonesia will become the global production base for Toyoto's new minivans, the Bisnis Indonesia newspaper reported Wednesday, quoting an official from the Japanese giant.

Up to 70 000 of the "multipurpose" vehicles would be produced in Indonesia each year, the report said.

About 10 000 of the minivans, or 14 percent of the annual production, would be sold in Southeast Asian countries and elsewhere, Toyota managing officer Akira Okabe said.
