Police called for help in Newfoundland strike
St. John's — Police were called in Tuesday morning to help managers get to work as striking public-sector workers in Newfoundland and Labrador stepped up picket-line activity at several government buildings, including nursing homes.

Strikers stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the legislature in St. John's until officers forced spaces in the line to allow people to cross.

“The strikers have stepped up, not only at the Confederation Building, but also at other sites around the St. John's area,” Staff Sergeant June Layden of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said. “They stepped up their blockade at government buildings, so it's putting an added challenge to us.”

There was no immediate word of arrests.
