we use ATM card as cash only..or we don't buy anything.

Habit we got into after losing everything in an Earthquake....and it helps one's sleeping pattern'

We saw so many friends get into financial trouble many years ago..and we made the conscious decision ..must be 16 years ago..we paid everything off..some things faster than others..but we paid all cards off..and we said..if we don't have the cash to buy..we don't buy.

It stops one from buying impulsively..and buying what is not nessesary..we buy our cars..we don't lease and we keep them for at least 8 years ..

We buy nothing on credit.

It makes for a good marriage..as there is nothing financial to argue about..unlike many of our friends who fight about $$$ all the time..

We paid cash for our son's college..and not a dime went on credit..

Was it easy..no we sacrificed other things..and did without all the bullshit other of our friends thought they had to have....but we have maintained paying cash for everything.

We lost a home in 1994..and lost everything in it in the Northridge earthquake..everything..nothing was saved.. ..and shortly after my husbands business went on strike...we got very little in insurance..and our mortgage loan for our "lost home"..was "called by the bank"..and we had to pay off the mortgage..thank god we had been savers and not spenders..because we ..unlike almost all of our neighbors were able to pay off the mortgage..and sell the property "as is"....we were barely able to buy our next home..with the few nickles and dimes we had left..but we did it..and we worked hard to then pay down that mortgage..but believe me we came close to being homeless..for a period.. .but we survived by using coupons..for groceries..we had our son going to college and we had no idea how we were going to manage that after losing a home ..relocating..losing my hubby's salary for almost a year..but we did it..we became extremely frugal.. what we did was we learned a very valuable lesson..things are just that ..things..they can be lost over night..but as long as we have our health and our safety..everything else is gravy.

We both realized in that horrible time..we had never been happier..we had lost everything..all the frivolous crap..and we had to struggle like hell to rebuild our lives..but we were happier than when we had all the shit we thought we couldn't live without.....

We decided then ..no credit ..no bills..not as many problems..and life became so much easier..and more enjoyable.

I am not saying it was easy when it happened..it was not..it was life-changing...

But now when I see so many friends and family struggling with mounting bills and payments for everything..and over extended in everything..I realize ..that life changing time for us in 1994-6..was a blessing.

It was a hard lesson then..but it was a blessing.

We owe no one anything..not a red cent..and we sleep well today and we will tomorrow as well.

Lesson I can share..get rid of all credit..don't buy stuff unless you pay cash...if you can't pay for it with cash..don't buy it..

Pay off the damn credit cards..will it mean sacrificing ..you bet it will..make a deal with yourself..no more adult toys or frivolous stuff..most of it is just that..stuff...until you pay off all credit.

Life will be easier for you..I promise you that!!

5. A false premise.
Your heirs are not responsible for your debts. Once your assets are exhausted
the creditors are stuck. That is the only good news here.

Your CC debt dies when you do. By all means pay them off soonest.
We are extremely careful with CC I personally do not have one. My partner has 2 one for farm supply store and one through his bank. We only charge what we cannot pay cash for and that we can pay it off in a few months. We have the house loan and car loan which we want to pay off early..unfortunately we are hand to mouth and well thats life. We buy farm equipment that we need to keep the place going, we prefer to pay cash, but sometimes it is just not possible.
We don't buy ipods or nonsense like that. I only buy necessary things like food or stuff to repair /restore the house, I buy all food on sale and I don't buy ready made stuff for the most part I don't want chemicals in my food. We are turning the place into an organic farm and we grow food here, I try to buy local from other nearby farmers. I don't buy the latest fashions..Im strictly jeans and tee shirt guy. Our truck we bought new in 98, we bought the car (38mpg) when the 1990 minivan finally croaked and could not be revived one more time.

7. The "average" number here is meaningless
The distribution of debt is highly skewed, so the median and tne mode would be more relevant. A significan percent of users carry over no debt on their cards.

10. Me, too
I charge EVERYTHING and pay it off every month. I've gotten $256 in cash back in less than a year for using my Discover card. I sign up for specials when they give 5% cash back for things such as groceries, gas, or even buying Xmas gifts online. I pay no fees or interest. Can't beat that. But of course I don't charge anything I can't afford to pay.

9. This is somewhat dated.
Minimum payments must now cover interest and principle (3% to 4% depending on interest rate) which means eventually you will pay it off.

However generally it is not a good idea to make minimum payment, especially not for years straight.
