Poll question: Job Fair Attendees: Have You Ever Found A Job Through A Job Fair?
Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 06:59 PM by stopbush
I was just watching Lou Dobbs. One of his reports on Lucent in MA made the point that the government put $3M into "retraining 2,400 workers...most of the $ went to resume writing, career counseling and job fairs."

I've been to a few job fairs. At the last one I attended about 3 weeks ago, the guy in charge asked for a show of hands of those who had been to a job fair. 300 hands went up. Next question was "how many of you have found a job at a job fair?" Three hands went up. Hmmm. A 1% success rate!

So I ask any out there who have attended a job fair: did you find a job through a job fair? Yes or no answers will do.

1. Job fairs are a bullshit, waste of time, just like
a lot of temp agencies are a bullshit waste of time, few people ever get anything from them.

I have a B.A. AND a paralegal certificate and I've never gotten one damn job, even temp, from the legal placement agencies.

6. Humiliating & discouraging? Help me out here, I was going to go to
my first one on Monday and have always had bad feelings on these "meat markets". Could you expand a bit? I might not be emotionally ready for one of these....

Of the 2 private sector jobs I've held in recent years, I found one (the better one) through a job fair. The other I found via personal contacts.

(EDIT: That was in 1999, though, in a far different job market than exists today.)

4. it was 1985. I had a computer science degree & 2 yrs experience
I went around the booths looking for communications equipment companies. I was hoping for Hayes Modems. But I got lucky and met the HR person from another communications equipment manufacturer and dropped off my resume. One of the managers phone interviewed me a few days later. I went in a few days after that and voila, got a job.

But it was 1985. Your mileage may vary.
