PPT in action today....
Look at the DOW...

And NASDAQ composite...

The stock market wants to tank, but the powers that be are doing
their damnest to prevent this from happening. The stock market is the
opiate that is keeping the sheeple in line...

..."The stock markets want to tank" ???

5. Look at the last hour or so
Traders need to do something during the day to make their money. They base their decisions upon ... upon ... well, who knows. During the day bits and pieces of news come out that make them think nicely about the state of the market (bullish) or think badly (bearish). If near the end of the day the market starts to go down on the basis of bad news, the powers that be don't want THAT bit of information on the evening news so the Plunge Protection Team starts buying things at exhorbitant prices to drive it back up.

That way, the evening news says "the Dow lost 50 points" instead of "the Dow had a major meltdown of 150 points" and Dubya gets to smirk another day.

6. There was a Piehole Alert too as a factor. Chimpy spoke live
and markets took a dive. PPT has to work extra-hard, then.
