Canadian cattle herd soars to record high
The ban on Canadian beef by countries that are normally huge buyers has left a record14.7 million head of cattle on farms across the country, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.

According to the Livestock Survey of 10,000 farmers conducted in December and January, beef producers had 1.2 million or 8.7 per cent more head of cattle on their farms on Jan. 1, 2004, than they did on the same day a year earlier.

The survey results reflect only the impact of a ban on Canadian beef following the disclosure of a single reported case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or mad cow disease), on an Alberta farm May 20.
