What segments of the Job Market will do well over the next
5 yrs. A recession/depression must mean that certain pockets of labor will flourish. What are these areas? If you were suggesting a job change or a college degree in a certain field, what would that suggestion be?

16. Local and State Government is laying off right now
Tax revenues have gone to hell, and fast.

Real Estate Taxes - Gone to hell

Sales Taxes - Gone to Hell

Excise Taxes - Gone to Hell

Income Taxes - Heading There.

19. It's a common complaint from my Bail Bond guys.
When I'm there, people are coming in and paying
partials. Like $20.00 at a time!

5. In the Great Depression, you couldn't go wrong
if you owned a greasy spoon or a gin mill. People with a few cents to spare while they were out looking for work would stop in for the cheapest food on the menu (five cent fried egg sandwiches were popular) and a beer after.

My grandfather got through it as a part time professor, part time superintendent of schools, and music teacher on the side. My maternal grandmother got through it as a divorced mother eating oatmeal 3 times a day while she waited to see which of her stocks would survive. About a third did and she was quite comfortable by the time she died.

I have my dad's diary from 1931-1932. He hustled for movie money, selling anything that could be sold. He was a teenager from hell with a fondness for biker movies, so the film industry did fairly well.

10. Aren't there non-degree programs in the health care field ?
Medical Assistant is a certificate program, no ? Polysom tech ? Pharmacy tech ? I think the technician designation indicates a non-degreed position

Nursing Assistant is not a degree progam.

I'm sure there are others.

17. Yeah, but....
What happens is that the nurses, Physician Assistants and others all come creeping back to healthcare when they lose their lucrative positions in Day Trading, Real Estate, Finance, Stocks, etc. Health Care may have been short workers during the boom years, but it is already filling back up as described.

20. Don't count the health care chicken yet...
got a relative who is an MD in family practice working three days a week. No patients. Either lost ins. or wont spend the co-pay.
A Doc is out looking for a second job as we speak, and according to him, it is quite common. Small practices shutting their doors left and right.

11. Anything that can't be outsourced and is needed in good times and bad.
And if Obama does it right, gov't contracted jobs.

Pawn shops.

Downside is the military recruiters might be making their bounty easily.

Non-degreed medical jobs maybe. My concern is health care industry is looking to hire from overseas to cut costs.
