A friend of mine was laid off last week and was hired yesterday.
She has spent her entire adult life in the Mortgage and Title biz.

For the last month or so, she was just waiting for the ax to fall. And fall it did, just last week.

But, lo and behold, she was invited for an interview yesterday with a major Title company in San Francisco. Called me last night, all excited because she had been hired, reporting for her first day of work today.

I expressed amazement that anyone in that segment was hiring, and she said she couldn't believe it, either. Told me that she expressed same to the interviewer, who told her that it was just a matter of time before the market turned and things would be all better again.
Told her that the company had decided to hang tough, make it through the down-turn.

She was so excited.

I just got off the phone with her a few minutes ago.

She told me that she drove into the City for her first day on her new job, parked, walked a couple of blocks to the Title company.

The doors were locked.

2. Wow. That sucks.
Was it this one? http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stories/2008/07/28/daily34.html

Good luck to your friend -- that's a tough industry to work in these days.

8. That's the one.
I couldn't remember the name when I posted.

She sounded like a frightened little girl on the phone.

I am going to take her someplace quiet and cool, tonight.

5. Ouch!! The offer was probably in good faith, just so much up in the air in a
situation like that; someone was trying to keep it together, hence the offer, but it didn't turn out to be their call.

Been there, done that twice since 9/11.

Wish her luck and solidarity from the DU!

6. Oh, man --
First that pressure of fearing for her job, then getting axed, then the elation of finding a new position so quickly! She must be devastated. I'm devastated FOR her. I wish her the best of luck.

She told me that she just drove home and sat by herself, all day.

I am leaving soon, take her someplace quiet. Maybe play some songs for her.

on edit:

I just got this from ocelot. I couldn't recall the company's name.

13. Thank you. I have always believed....
that the days that we have and the times that we share are Treasures too sacred to save.

Just love 'til you've loved it away.

I cannot let her be alone.

Not today.

She has already had way to much of that.

16. That sounds great!
As long as they're not tickets for Mama Mia! AbbA might drive her over the edge.

And...I have good news for the future if she still needs uplifting - even if she doesn't. Spinal Tap may tour again!

7. My god, that's awful.
And what a horrible thing to do to someone who needs a job. My sympathies to your friend.

I'm afraid we're going to see a lot more pain before it even BEGINS to get better.

a rep from the Temp agency my company worked with said they were filling $8/hr manufacturing positions with college graduates. It's only gotten worse.

19. I hear that...
We had 102 applicants for three summer intern spots... and all the while these bright kids were here, they were asking questions about how to get hired at a firm like ours. Sadly, one of the three will go out the door, taking her entitlement issues with her. It's going to be doubly hard for "daddy's little girls" when they can't land a job because the kid ahead of her was willing to work his way up from the bottom and didn't feel entitled to anything. Seriously... she argued with her supervisor over the assignments she was given! I was sad that her spot didn't go to one of the 99 that didn't get the job.

What a world.

24. Heartbreaking...but good to know...
...that she has TomInTib to lift her spirits and be with her during this time.

I'm sure she's in shock. Hell, I'm in shock after reading your post. I really
feel for her. She will land on her feet, and she's doing all of the right things--
reaching out to others, talking about it and getting out.

It's tough.

Once again, TomInTib--you are one cool cat, helping out a friend and being
a generous, caring person.

People like you are the reason that human cloning should be legal! :)

Keep us posted on your friend.

26. How awful
I am sure that the offer was made in good faith. However, these days, when a company or regulatory agency decide to close, they move swiftly. Better this way for most, except, of course, for this rare event that your friend found herself in.

She is lucky to have you as a caring friend. I hope that she can find another job, perhaps in a related industry.
