OPM -- Mugged by China
Last year, for Public Service Recognition Week, the Office of Personnel Management handed out coffee mugs with the OPM seal and the mantra "Working for America" emblazoned on it. But the mugs were made in China.
This year, OPM gave away plastic non-spill coffee mugs -- "Made in America." There were also leather memo-pad holders and very sharp dark-blue tote bags, both with "Working for America" on them (the totes have the OPM seal). Those were made in -- you guessed it -- China.

1. They don't even have to try to be ridiculous, and they are.

2. They didn't say working IN America
And much of China is working for America, Working for companies who are making products for American companies to sell in America.
Maybe that was the message they were sending.
Regardless, it was a pretty stupid move.

3. Last year I interviewed with an "adware" company
They were very old-school. Seemed like everybody in the place was 110 years old, and had been there since the founding. Except for the cute secretary they'll called "missy." You know, "hey, missy there, could you bring me a coffee?" Anyway, they prided themselves on making everything themselves. They had die cut machines and plastic moulding machines and lathes and jigs, and most of it was sitting idle. They were down to half their work force that they had just five years ago.

"We don't like to do it, we really push the "Made In America" part of our catalog...but we can't compete with the Chinese stuff. People say they want "Made in America," but when the quote is nearly double, they say 'eh, we'll take the China ones.'"

Their manufacturing company had essentially become and order-taking and fullfillment center for Chinese manufacturers.

Oh, and I didn't get the job. Too much experience. They needed someone cheap who didn't really care that much about design. "After all, we're just selling cheap Chinese stuff now...there's no margin in it to pay anyone."
