Hundreds rally in support of grad student union (NYU)
On day union contract expires, 76 arrested in front of Bobst Library as tension between NYU and grad students escalates

by Barbara Leonard
News Editor

On the day the graduate student union's contract with NYU expired, 76 protesters involved with a rally outside Bobst Library were arrested for civil disobedience Wednesday.

Included among the group, none of whom were actually jailed, was John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO and other top union officials, as well as graduate students and several undergraduates.

The rally outside Bobst, which was attended by about 500 protestors, brought a climactic end to the first round of graduate students' attempts to renew a contract with the university.

Though the National Labor Review Board ruled in 2002 that graduate students be recognized as workers who could negotiate as a collective bargaining unit, that decision was overturned last summer, making NYU no longer legally obligated to deal with the union. <snip>
