"Best" Conservative: Which one do you have the most respect
for ? Are there any conservatives who are honest, untied to corporate money, and who want democracy to work the way Jefferson intended it to ? I'm just curious. TIA.

1. Chuck Grassley (IA)
He's been fighting the good fight against lax standards at the FDA for a long time. He's good people. Sometimes a little flaky, but he's on the side of the people.

2. Lou Dobbs
He sometimes gets on my nerves, simply by taking conservative stances, but he definitely believes in democracy and cares about the American worker.

I'd have a lot of disagreements with him, but not any disrespect.

22. I agree, too
Lou seems to be the only person who has consistantly kept the problems of the American worker, middle class, etc. at the forefront of discussion. He addresses the TRUE domestic issues our country faces and doesn't hesitate to ram it to those conservatives and corporations who are doing the most harm to the citizens of this country.

28. I'm surprised
no one mentioned Congressman Ron Paul. If I were a Republican, he would be the guy I would vote for. He's the only one of them who makes sense these days.

29. There are some good things about Dobbs, but from what I've seen
of him I don't think he's completely honest. He recently read the cost of the immigration bill as being something like 47 trillion, when the number he was reading said 47 billion. Maybe just a mistake, but I think he was determined to make the bill look bad and I think he misread it intentionally. Not to mention he calls practically everything amnesty when it just isn't. If you want to raise an objection then go ahead, but don't lie to get people on your side.

5. They've all been discredited by the "conservatives" in charge
Whether they like it or not, their task is to rehabilitate the concept of conservatism. And it's about time they got to work. Until they make some real progress (if you'll excuse the pun) in that direction, I have no problem painting them all with the same broad brush.

7. Amo Houghton is mine
One of the old guard Republicans and a good man. I disagree with many of his positions, but I can plainly see the cause for disagreement when I do. He voted against giving Bush a ticket to take war to Iraq.

Is a man of principle. He did the right thing and still has his "core values" (as the neos love to say). Tom DeLay (delay) hates him and that's almost good enough for me.

16. My fav conservitive
Fy favorite conservitive by FAR is John F Kennedy.
Look at his programs, they were hugely conservitive, but liberal at the time. You can bet what's liberal now will be conservitive in 30 years..

17. That's a joke, right?
I just watched "Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment" yesterday.

Anybody who calls out the national guard to help a couple black kids get into an all-white college is NOT conservative.

JFK represented the best of liberalism.

21. Goldwater in his later years
He detested the fundies taking over the GOP, and was practically a liberal by the time he left the Senate. Had he lived long enough he may have become the un-Zell.

25. Bill Clinton
Based on his record. He would make a much better conservative president than Bush Jr.

Look:

Free Trade,
Welfare reform,
A whole bunch of little wars,
Much slower growth of government spending

I am frequently teasing repub coworkers that Clinton was much more conservative than Bush and what is interesting they recently started agreeing with me.

26. My vote is John McCain
I don't get why so many Repubs view him as "unconservative". His most important credentials are in the economic area, where he supports lower taxes and lower spending. He is pro-life. He is pro-military, not in a shallow flag-waving way, but in making sure that programs get funded and vets get assistance they need and deserve.

I know his position on immigration, and it’s basically the same as Reagan’s.

While it didn’t mean much being from Massachusetts, I voted for him in the 2000 primary, and I truly wish he had been president instead of Bush.

Aside from the phallic name, I think he really is interested in nuclear nonproliferation. He has disappointed me with his Bush toadying, but if you had to pick one, he would be mine.
