U.S. Daily Casualties 6/17/2004

As of Wednesday, 828 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 609 died as a result of hostile action and 219 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 18; Spain, eight; Bulgaria and Poland, six each; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Latvia and the Netherlands have reported one each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 690 U.S. soldiers have died -- 500 as a result of hostile action and 190 of nonhostile causes, according to the military.

The latest deaths reported by the U.S. military:


Three U.S. soldiers were killed Wednesday in a rocket attack on a U.S. logistics base near Balad.


The latest identifications reported by the U.S. military:


Army Pfc. Shawn M. Atkins, 20, Parker, Colo.; died Monday of a noncombat injury in Baghdad; assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 4th Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Hanau, Germany.
