A thread on Free Republic seems to have two opposing sides regarding Lincoln.
Edited on Sat Feb-13-10 12:13 AM by Progressivism
Some seem to favor him :

"I asked this question of my high school students today as part of an assignment: “To what political party did Abraham Lincoln belong?” I heard one girl say “I think it was the Boston Tea Party”, a couple of them wrote “Democratic” and “Whig”, “National Party”, “Third Party”. I expected them to look it up if they didn’t know, but really, I didn’t expect anyone would say “Boston Tea Party” and mean it. Two said Republican."

Some disagree: Abe Lincoln was the devil incarnate and destroyed the USA as established by the FOUNDERS.

I understand how a FLIP SLICK WILLARD RINO ROMNEY supporter such as yourself would be all retarded over him.

I'm not really surprised because the Republican Party is a Southern Based,Conservative Party. But I was a little surprised at some of the dissenting opinions in response to the OP of the thread, since Lincoln was a party icon.

1. In the real world, people look at Lincoln as a complex colossus.
In the no-opposable-thumb world he's a simple hero or blackhearted villain.

OTOH, the student who said he was a Whig was pretty close, in that Lincoln was affiliated with them prior to the founding of the GOP.

2. A Whig as a young man, elected President as a Republican, and died a National Union Party member...
as to the opinions of Mr Lincoln from those denizens on the Free Republic site, I'll take my counsel from Mr Lincoln himself:

"We should be too big to take offense and too noble to give it."

~ President Abraham Lincoln
