The current Republican Party is actually the Conservative Party using the Republican name.
I remember when I was younger, and the Republicans were more to the center
than they are today, just as the Democrats were a bit more to the left than they
are today. Everything seems to have shifted to the right.

1. Back during the civil war
The Republican party was the progressive liberal party, favorable to progress and reform, while the democrats were the conservative party, favoring to preserve existing conditions and limit change. This started to change in the depression and the election of FDR.

2. Conservative

Conservative Con*serv"a*tive, n.
1. One who, or that which, preserves from ruin, injury,
innovation, or radical change; a preserver; a conserver.
<1913 Webster[br />

Does that sound like most of the creeps who call themselves republicans?

6. Traditionally conservatives were
against 'foreign entanglements'. They were also against military spending except during time of war. Doesn't sound much like today's ideologically bent GOP, does it?
