Those of us in the Chicago area have lost a great political columnist. Steve Neal of the Sun-Times died yesterday at the age of 54 of undetermined circumstances.
I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed reading his columns. He was fair (though he sure had a thing against Dick Durbin), and had a fantastic sense of history.
He was not afraid to take a position, and he covered politics from the Presidency down to Chicago alderman and committeeman races - and all with the same flair. He was required reading for local political junkies.
His passing in the midst of such an exciting US Senate primary season is especially unfortunate. He'll certainly be missed.
