Ann Coulter's Treason review in today's WP
Anne Applebaum, an editorial writer for The Washington Post, reviews Ann Coulter's "TREASON" in today's Book World....

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40170-2003Jul24.html

Some excerpts:

"Yet about halfway through Treason, an extended rant on these subjects, I felt a strong urge to get up, throw the book across the room, and join up with whatever Leninist-Trotskyite-Marxist political parties still exist in America. Even the company of Maoist insurgents would be more intellectually invigorating than that of Ann Coulter. More to the point, whatever side this woman is on, I don't want to be on it."

"All of this, of course, might be funny if it were meant to be funny, but it doesn't seem to be. Coulter hasn't got an ironic or witty bone in her body. Her insults are crass and dull-witted, and her jokes fall flat. She has no sense of history and skips back and forth from the Truman administration to the Reagan administration, as if 40 years made no difference. She quotes liberally from newspaper cuttings, television interviews and other conservative diatribes, apparently having done no actual research at all."

"As I say, it's easy to explain why this book is bad. What is much, much harder to explain is why so many people think this book is good, or at least why so many people are buying it."

1. Moore is like Coulter?
Still, it isn't hard to imagine using the same methods to write the same book from precisely the opposite point of view, and indeed someone has already done it: Michael Moore, in Stupid White Men.

This makes me want to discount the whole article. I don't think Moore would be described as dull-witted. Crass maybe, but his jokes don't fall flat.

2. True, but...
...Moore does tend to see things as black and, uh, white. But with the Coulters of the world getting all the attention, it's wonderful (and refreshing) to read an in-your-face book like Stupid White Men.

4. Er, not quite
Check out the NYT review of books. That little dagger next to Coulter's screed means that the sales are largely bulk sales.

That means right wing stink tanks are buying them up for the faithful. Since even the faithful are sickened by this poorly written crap, most of those copies will be returned to the publisher and heavily discounted in the not-too-distant future.

Dead giveaways to the true populatrity of this aging bimbette's efforts were the "get Coulter's new book FREE" promotion on Newsmax and the (full) kiosks in bookstores advertising "buy one, get one free."

Real folks are saving their money. They can tune into Faux and AM radio for next to nothing. Why should they bother reading rubbish?

5. I don't think those who would agree with or admire her actually read
so of course RW groups have to buy them in bulk just so they sell. I best most people with free copies don't read past the first few pages--too hard.

6. hehe
...the Democratic Party -- which has, she claims, been suffering from "pusillanimous psychosis" since World War II

She's so goofy. She must have one of those fancy new word processors with a thesaurus built in.
