Koppel: CBS Trying to Do Harder News (b/c of Scott Pelley)
Former Nightline anchor Ted Koppel said Wednesday that CBS was "clearly" making an effort to do harder news on its nightly newscast and he hoped it succeeded.

Koppel was referring to CBS' naming of Scott Pelley to the anchor chair.

Moderating a New American Foundation event Wednesday on the FCC's just-released future of media study, Koppel said it will be "very interesting" to follow the ratings of the newscast with Pelley at the helm. "I think there is actually a significant number of people out there who are just ravenous for a TV network that will really give them good hard news," he said.

1. harder than what?
what passes for 'news' now would have barely made the cut for human interest a mere 20 years ago. And I'm not even getting into the quality of the reportage.

2. I may give it a shot.
It was my go to news station until Katie. When one of her first guests was Limpballs, I knew I would never watch that channel with her on it.

4. Same here. I didn't watch one Couric newscast, but I'll give Scott Pelley a try.
In fact, I'm going to add it to my daily dvr schedule.

5. here's video of Pelley's CBS Evening News debut

And other archived full eps are on evening.cbsnews.com.

CBS decided to go retro with Pelley: the background globes are from the 1970s/Walter Cronkite era, while the theme music is from the late 80s/early 90s Dan Rather era. The graphics also look a bit less detailed in colors. But I think Pelley's doing a good job as anchor and executive editor so far, much better than Couric. Combined with his experience as a correspondent for the evening news and 60 minutes.

3. I don't understand the "making an effort" part. Is there heavy lifting involved?
Is it really that difficult to shoehorn a story about Wikileaks into their jam packed schedule?

6. They'll never clear the stench
Of Limbaugh and the Bush* war criminals from their studios.
And I'll never believe that any component of the current fascist media would ever on its own revert to journalism.
