The Financial Times' Freemium model
This may work for some newspapers especially financial papers that are deemed to have valuable information.

I came across this at random, as I don't read the newspaper regularly. But, here are the tiers of how much you can read:

Non-registered and non-paying: 2 articles/month
Registered and non-paying: 10 articles/month

After that, you have to pay to read on line.
