9 years later, Maureen Dowd calls Supreme Court decision on Bush v. Gore a "heist"
Edited on Sat May-02-09 08:53 PM by Old Hank
Maureen Dowd (May 2, 2009:

"Bill Kristol, the editor of The Weekly Standard, tried to put the best face on it, noting, “This will make it easier for G.O.P. candidates in 2010 to ask to be elected to help restore some checks and balances in Washington.”

This is quite touching, given that the start of the 21st century will be remembered as the harrowing era when an arrogant Republican administration did its best to undermine checks and balances. (Maybe when your reign begins with Bush v. Gore, a Supreme heist that kissed off checks and balances, you feel no need to follow the founding fathers’ lead.)"

Good for Maureen, but the big question is: Did she protest against this "heist" in 2000, when the opinion of mainstream columnists like her could have swayed the public and our leaders?

If you search the NY Times archives for Dowd's columns from November to January, 2009 (The decision was delivered on December 12, 2000), you will find Dowd mocking Gore for trying to get all votes counted, and nothing against the atrocious SC decision. But don't take my word for it. Try it yourself and look it up.

1. During the 2000 election and recount,
Dowd seemed to think the whole thing was rather hysterical. She had spent the entire year prior to the election belittling and ridiculing Al Gore. I remember she wrote that she just could wait for all those Texans to show up in Washington with their cowboy boots. It was going to be a real gas according to Ms. Dowd.

She was part of the media that failed the nation.

3. Yep!
She must have a finger in the air and feels the way the wind is blowing.

Too late for her and others.

4. She was too busy
hammering away at Al Gore. She owes Al and the country an apology, but I guess we'll have to wait a while longer for that.

8. Oh, So NOW MoDo Sez It Was A Heist
Edited on Sun May-03-09 08:22 AM by Vogon_Glory
Oh, so NOW Maureen Dowd says that Bush vs Gore was a heist. Sorry, Maureen, but my respect for you and your writings vanished a long time ago. You were a full-fledged member of the pack of Beltway journalists who spent the 2000 campaign savaging Vice President Gore while ignoring George HW Bush's beamish boy and the beamish boy's gubernatorial record. If you wrote more than one or two token columns critiquing George W, it's news to me--but you sure wrote a lot of columns trashing Al Gore. Week after week, column after column, you happily chipped away at Gore's support. If there was a third woman besides Katherine Harris and Karen Hughes, it was YOU. If there's a Pierre Laval award for morale boosting, I'd nominate you in a New York minute.

Thanks for eight (obscene adjective) years of the WORST presidential administration since James Buchanan's! The USA and this poor, suffering planet continues to pay the hideous price for your Beltway conceit!
