Limbaugh: My Ratings are Way, Way Up

POSTED March 6, 2009 | 11:08 AM

By BYRON YORK
Chief Political Correspondent

One side effect of the Democratic campaign against Rush Limbaugh has been to increase -- dramatically increase -- the talk show host's ratings. This morning I asked Rush if he had any numbers he could share on just what effect the increased visibility has had on his business. This is his response:

The latest numbers I have are for January, well before this kerfuffle began, and they are through the roof -- six shares in NY, for example. There are daily ratings taken now in about the top 15 markets but I have not seen them yet. All I can tell you is that as of January, we booked 80 percent of all our 2008 revenue and we'll be over 2008 by the end of this month.

Given those numbers, it's clear that the most decisive economic stimulus produced by the Obama administration so far has been at the Excellence in Broadcasting Network.

1. Ratings do not equal agreement.
I don't care what limpballs ratings are one way or the other. The distraction of the gopper message is perfect, though. No repuke on the Hill can get coverage, and America is seeing the fat one as the repuke leader.

2. I agree.
The idiots in the republican party can't see that all this is for Rush is "RATINGS"! He doesn't care about what happens to them, as long as he is on top, and he can claim to be the most powerful person in the country! A lot of his high ratings simply have to do with people tuning in to see just what kind of BS he is spreading today. When they get enough of this gas bag, the numbers will drop, but the damage he has done to the republican party will only get worse, and that's a good thing!

7. True but ratings do equal advertising dollars.
It's a far easier proposition to advertise on Mr. Limbuagh's radio programme if he's pulling in an audience than say, someone else who isn't. Plus there's two components of advertising here: the advertising directly on Mr. Limbaugh's programming and the advertising carried on the station broadcasting his programme. Local stations will often sell an advertiser a "package" which will include spots on "all top rated programmes". Advertiser agrees upon this, and lo and behold, advertising on that particular programme we all love to hate.

Mark.

4. Maybe someday, Americans will organize and punish the companies that sponsor Rush
It would seem obvious that pressure should be directed at his SPONSORS.

8. But sponsors will advertise where there are listeners.
To kill the sponsors, you have to reduce the potential audience they could reach. No audience equals no sponsors willing to risk the cash.

When you got Mr. Limbaugh in the news ranting and raving, he's going to get exposure, and you will get curious people listening in. Those same curious people get Arbitron diaries.

6. so ... he cannot provide the factual proof to back up his word?
"The latest numbers I have are for January, well before this kerfuffle began,"

Of course, when you consider that he sits there and says, when you quote him exactly and directly, and in context, he calls you a liar, what good is his word on what's true?

10. Chode Limbaugh's Ratings May Go Up, BUT...
Chode Limbaugh (Oops, I meant RUSH Limbaugh's) ratings may go up, but I doubt that higher ratings for Tripping the Rifts (Oops, I meant EIB's) ratings will translate into enough Republican Party votes to return the House and Senate to solid Republican control after the 2010 elections. In the meantime, the Senile Elephant Party gets to have Rush strung around their necks.
