Forty journalists were killed worldwide by the middle of 2005, nine of them in Latin America, according to a recent report by the International Press Institute (IPI). <snip>
"All too often, there is little or no evidence to suggest that the authorities are taking decisive action to identify and bring to justice those responsible for these heinous crimes," IPI said.
Two journalists each were killed in Brazil, Colombia, Haiti and Mexico. In Peru, the National Association of Journalists said that verbal and physical attacks against journalists are on the rise. Between January and June of 2005, there have been 47 cases of verbal and physical aggression against journalists, up from 34 cases during the same period last year.
According to the Inter American Press Association, attacks on Peruvian journalists included "armed raids on media outlets, brief kidnappings, seizure and destruction of notes and equipment and anonymous death threats. In some cases, especially in the provinces, the attackers have been identified and linked to local officials who have been challenged by the press."
