U.S. targeting insurgents in Falluja, second city

FALLUJA, Iraq (CNN) -- American troops and Iraqi security forces clashed Thursday with insurgents in the cities of Falluja and Tall 'Afar, killing dozens of Iraqis in airstrikes and gunbattles, officials in Iraq said.

U.S. warplanes targeted what officials called a position "occupied by numerous foreign fighters" in northern Falluja, a hotbed of resistance west of Baghdad.

A U.S. official said that an unknown number of civilians were killed in the strike.<snip>

<snip>U.S.-led multinational forces and Iraqi security forces early Thursday launched an operation to oust "anti-Iraqi" fighters in the northern city of Tall 'Afar, a U.S. military statement said.

The military called Tall 'Afar, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Mosul, "a suspected haven for terrorists crossing into Iraq from Syria."<snip>

1. Big trouble with this over time is

when people realize that we aren't killing uniformed military fighters. These "kills" are many times bystanders or women and children caught in the fray, the "fighters" are rag tag guys in Nikes
and polo shirts who live there.
