6. Can I ask a question?
I haven't really watched TV in years. I'm wondering if the "newscaster" in the video is considered a "real" newscaster or if his show is some sort of talk show or comedy show. I mean, even though television journalism had sunk pretty far back when I used to watch television news, it is shocking to think this guy's framing of the story, his reaction to Bush's stupid comment, and the laughter in the studio is considered normal, objective, professional journalism today.

Now, don't think I'm defending Bush or anything. This is a serious question that has nothing to do with what Bush said. I'm not asking about this particular newscaster's reaction to this particular story, I'm just wondering if this is what all news is like today. Is this kind of comic commentary just a regular part of television news now?

I think one of the real problems with our republic is that news and politics are being confused with entertainment. I think this benefits the Republicans greatly because the stupider and more shallow the level of discourse, the better they are going to do. So this rare glimpse at today's television news raises the question for me.

7. Details, please.
I have no idea of the context of this clip.

* Where was Jnr?

* What was the speech about?

* What was he saying after the audio cut off, yet you could still see him talking?

* Why was there such a great hum after that clip as we saw the presenter/crew's reaction? Was that the initial reaction before being cut n' pasted for TV?

* Was the Presenter trying to contain his laughter, or was he pissed at the laughing crewman?

I'm trying to Google search, but I find nothing. I'll need to answer these questions when I show it to some conservative friends.

8. Listen again to what Dubya said -- it speaks for itself.
"Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." Doesn't that alone sound goofy?

He was at a campaign stop in Poplar Bluff, MO. The purpose of his speech would be his campaign issues.

The "presenter" is Keith Olbermann of MSNBC's "Countdown". He's a Cornell University grad who got his start on tv at ESPN. He's known for his tongue-in-cheek style, but he isn't known for doctoring videos.

For your fourth question, knowing Keith Olbermann, he probably was trying to control his laughter & I doubt very much that he was pissed at the laughing crewman. You have to admit, we've NEVER had a president who speaks as poorly as Dubya.

21. About Keith Olbermann. . .
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 03:23 PM by scmirage
Yes, he's a former sports guy but he's also brilliant and does some hard-hitting, serious interviews. This is the guy who waved the "talking point" e-mails that the White House had sent him when he had Joe Wilson on the show. He refused to ask their questions (except for one, which he said, he thought was a fair question to ask). He's not on the White House payroll and he's not a kool-aid drinker. He regularly reports news that no one else will report (that's favorable to the Democrats). Yes, his show does have humor and devotes two sections a night (Keeping Tabs & Oddball) to funny stuff, but he absolutely can do the hard, tough interviews and in no way is his show just a comedy show in the sense that the Daily Show is. It's worth watching and it's a must-see for me. Read his blogs on the MSNBC Hardblogger site-he's a brilliant writer too.

22. Ok...
So what you and perhaps a couple of other people are saying is he does "real news," and then he has a segment where he does light-hearted stuff, like the silly news moment of the day or something. Is that right? If so, that's different than what I'm concerned about. As long as there is still a distinction between how a journalist behaves while reporting the news and this kind of behavior, then it still isn't as bad as it might be.

10. Context
But let me tell you what else we need to do. We need to do something about these frivolous lawsuits that are running up the cost of your health care and running good docs out of business. (Applause.) We've got an issue in America. Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country. See, I don't think you can be pro-doctor and pro-patient and pro-hospital and pro-trial lawyer at the same time. (Applause.) I think you've got to make a choice. My opponent made his choice, and he put him on the ticket. (Applause.) I made my choice. I'm for medical liability reform now. (Applause.) In all we do to improve health care, we will make sure that health decisions are made by doctors and patients, not by bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. (Applause.)

26. when your doctor butchers you, you should shut up, go home
and be quiet and not think about being compensated for your loss at the hands of a negligent hack.... that's what * is pretty much saying with regards to medical lawsuits. He thinks it's ok for a doctor to butcher at will and not be made to face the responsibility of what he/she did. His anti-trial lawyer rhetoric sounds really good when one is in good health and in no need for any kind of medical treatment or surgery...

11. cut n' pasted?
punistation, pardon my suspicion here but that is a term I keep hearing the likes of O'Reilly and Boortz use when referencing video clips. That and "context."

"cut n' pasted" alludes to something dishonest. This was an actual clip taken from an actual speech tryng to get support for tort reform.

17. Craig, I don't know your age, or when you quit viewing the idiot box but,
back in the 1960's there were shows reporting the lighter side of the news. That Was The Week That Was was one of them. I think Rowan and Martin's Laugh In also had a news segment and the Smothers Brothers had plenty of comments on the news, that's for sure. So you are right, we have a long history of mixing news and entertainment.

This is a dryer show than some of those of the sixties. The serious news is approached seriously. Then there is the lighter side of the news which is presented with Keith's dry humor.

IMHO it is worth watching. I am die-hard fan. I watch mostly news shows as I find the sit-coms too silly and frivolous to keep my attention. I think this show encapsulates the news very well.

What is wrong with mixing news with entertainment as long as the news is true? There are lots of people who wouldn't watch the news otherwise. I think it has the potential for drawing some of the smarter Faux news junkies from the darkside.

23. The best news I remember seeing
around the time of the 9/11 attacks, when I would watch some television news for the images, was the BBC news. Nothing but dry, talking heads reporting the news. That's what I want from news. I often visit comedycentral.com for streaming video clips of The Daily Show, but that is entertainment, not news. When I look for news I just want the facts.

There is this great moment in a great film from the late 80s called "Broadcast News." William Hurt is the new anchorman and he is doing a live broadcast about a clash between US and Lybian warplanes. As the information comes in and it turns out nobody was killed, he casually throws in a little editorial comment, "So I think we're okay." One of the news show's producers hears this comment and says to himself, "Who cares what you think?" That is my attitude toward all news "celebrities."

9. Olberman has been taking notes from the daily show as of late.
...And I'm lovin' it.
Last week he was mouthing the words to the "Mighty Mouse" song.

With this admin he has an inexhaustible source of material.
this one was especially good.

15. Keith really had a hard time keeping a straight face after that one.

He played it twice. Was he more composed after the other time? I can't remember, I was so busy laughing.

He gives the top five news stories that people will be talking about the following day. His presentation is great. He is somber when the news is serious but at other times he likes to lighten up the audience with little clips like these.

I think he has terrific timing and a marvelous sense of humor. He even gave William Hung, the American Idol reject, more than his 15 minutes of fame. Had Hung on his show to sing live, later showed some of Hung's video.

I think I remember that during the California recall, he had a lottery drum with the candidates' names in it to pick out which candidate he would feature that night. Even though it was just a prop, one night he pretended to have drawn the wrong name and drew several times before he "drew the name" of that night's guest candidate.

24. Very funny
however, he is once again a hypocrite. In Texas when he was governor poor women could not have breast exams and other pre-cancer test on their Medicaid. Even though the medical profession recommended them. I guess that was his compassionate conservatism helping to rid the world of welfare queens.
