Dear Nightline,
I was disappointed (but not surprised) that Nightline last night chose to cover the swift boat story as a campaign finance issue, precisely what the Bush administration wants to make us think this story is about.
Let me tell you a few other things this story is NOT about, but which the media is focussing on: it's not about negative campaigning, not about the legacy of Vietnam, and not even about Kerry.
It's about ONE thing, that has not been adequately covered in the news: a president that will do absolutely everything, no matter how ugly, cynical and dishonest, to get re-elected.
The normal excuse the media gives for ignoring, in Bush's favor, an important aspect of a story, is that "the democrats haven't brought it up."
Well yesterday, Kerry brought it in the form of a dramatic confrontation in Crawford. You don't have an excuse not to put that at the center of your coverage.
