Moseley Braun on Gay Marriage

Moseley Braun Statement on Massachusetts Supreme Court Ruling: Ambassador Praises Decision

"Discrimination against LGBT people tears at the fabric of the Constitution and weakens all of our rights. Today's landmark decision is good for America.

We must do everything possible to support families - including lesbian and gay families. All of us - regardless of sexual orientation - stand to benefit from equal marriage rights because stable families strengthen our communities and neighborhoods.

Nobody should be penalized for loving a same-sex partner. In the same way that legal discrimination against interracial partners was wrong, discrimination against same-sex couples is wrong. Our government should not be in the business of excluding lesbian and gay people from full participation in society. Today's ruling is an important step toward mending a terrible wrong and furthering equality and justice for all."

3. she's not stealing any votes yet
this is the primarys only -- you can't ''steal'' votes at this juncture -- she has done a brilliant job and with more money she'd be in a different position in the race. she's doing exactly what she should be doing.
you rock, ms. braun

4. well, she is taking prospective voters away from Kucinich, most specifical
I like Carol Moseley Braun

I do't believe she is corrupt

I feel she is taking up too much of the far left, and squashing our one true hope

5. Braun is an excellent candidate to represent leftists
She has a record of achievements on issues of concern to the left. Her rhetoric and political style is geared towards achieving progress. She knows when to be accomodating, and when not to.

On DOMA, for instance, she opposed the majority, articulated reasons for her opposition in a way that challenged but did not alienate potential allies--but she did not let it rest there. She went on to fight for hate crimes legislation (an important aspect of the struggle for gay civil rights), to fight against discrimination in adoption and further protect the rights of all parents, and so on. She did this in Washington, she marched in her own backyard of Chicago, she took the battle to legal journals and the community of legal scholars. The work that she has done has been instrumental in laying the political and legal groundwork we see today for respecting the rights of gays and lesbians in the area of family law.

If civil rights are integral to your particular brand of leftism, you will find among the current contenders no better champion of those rights than Carol Moseley Braun.

8. Do you want to make peace, or argue about it?
I think you're getting too hung up on rhetoric. On issues of defense spending, on our international disarmament treaties, on the role of diplomacy in resolving conflicts, on respect for international law, on the value of good international relations overall, there isn't a substantial difference between Braun's positions and what you are calling the true left. Peace Action on the candidates.

I think the same thing is true on a lot of trade issues, although I do acknowledge that Carol is not the furthest to the left. But, if you're like me, and you think trade is generally good, but slave labor sucks, child labor sucks, wreaking havoc on the environment sucks, giant sucking sounds suck, etc., then I don't see how Carol represents a bad choice.

Liberals are not the true left? To my way of thinking that seems like cutting of your nose to spite your face.
