South Jersey could be Biden country if Delaware Senator enters presidentia
July 8 - Some think it's already too late and the field is too crowded, but many South Jersey Democrats say they'd be excited if recent news reports that Delaware Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. may be close to entering the presidential race are true.

U.S. News and World Report quoted a member of Biden's family last week saying the senator is "80 percent likely" to become the tenth Democrat to enter the race for the White House, and a column by William Safire in Monday's New York Times suggested the 61-year-old senator might be the strongest Democrat to take on George W. Bush.

In Democratic circles in South Jersey, which, like Delaware, is part of the Philadelphia media market, Biden's is virtually a household name and some party leaders say Biden is almost a favorite son.

"If Joe Biden gets in, that is who I will support," Salem County Democratic Chairman Thomas G. Pankok said today.

1. Do no good
The Jersey primary is not till June, and Biden will be out of the race by then.

4. True
I think the last time it wasn't was in '84 when Mondale beat Hart to sew up the nomination due, in part, to Hart's disparaging remark about New Jersey while campaigning in California.

Biden has partial support in two states.

"Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson, joltin' Joe has left and gone away...."

6. Usually I'd make a comment about delegates being apportioned regionally...

but given that New Jersey's primary is in May or June, I don't see that this will make much difference, except maybe in superdelegates.
