California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was inaugurated on Monday, is already facing a political battle over a domestic partner bill signed by former Gov. Gray Davis, whom Schwarzenegger replaced during a special recall election last month.
Democratic presidential candidate and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry wrote to the governor-elect on Nov. 7, asking Schwarzenegger to "reconsider" his position regarding California's Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act (AB 205).

Conservatives, however, are trying to overturn the law. AB 205 faces two lawsuits: one from the Campaign for California Families and another from Republican state Sen. William "Pete" Knight who authored Proposition 22, the California law that states marriage is between a man and a woman. Conservatives are also gathering signatures for a petition to overturn the law by placing it on a ballot during the March 2004 election.
Mindful of these efforts, Sen. Kerry wrote, "As a self-fashioned friend of the gay and lesbian community, you have stated that gay and lesbian couples should receive full protection under the law and should not be discriminated against. ? Unfortunately, you have already gone on record stating that you would have vetoed this landmark legislation."
Kerry's letter concludes with him asking Schwarzenegger to "publicly speak out against this ballot initiative and work to uphold this law that promotes strong families and equality for all Americans." http://www.gay.com/news/article.html?2003/11/17/1
