President Vicente Fox's campaign violated election law by accepting more than half a million dollars in illegal donations during his successful presidential bid in 2000, investigators charged Thursday.
Thursday's report by the Federal Electoral Institute was unlikely to have a direct effect on the president, but could have major repercussions for his party, National Action. The institute doesn't have the authority to bring charges, but it could levy stiff fines against the party.
Mr. Fox took office in December 2000, ending the Institutional Revolutionary Party's 71-year hold on the presidency.
The report said that the Fox campaign took donations of $100,000 (U.S.) and $160,000 from two foreign donors. The report didn't name the alleged donors.
