Small donors put Dean 2nd in S.C. money race
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's presidential campaign says his knack for winning small donations shows he's building grass-roots support in South Carolina for the Feb. 3 Democratic primary.

Dean has raised about $21,000 from South Carolinians who gave less than $200 during the second-quarter of fund raising, his campaign said Wednesday. That puts him second overall in the state behind North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

The smaller donations show Dean's candidacy is bringing people into politics, campaign spokeswoman Courtney O'Donnell said. "So many people have been drawn back into the political process by being introduced to Governor Dean and his message," she said.

1. The other HUGE benefit is that contributors can also be campaigners
...the more individual contributors you have (all else equal) the more campaigners you have. That's a GREAT thing for the Dean campaign.

And I think he will be able to. I mean he seems to be communicating with his supporters better than most candidates. I'm still leaning toward Kerry or Clark, but Dean definately has the best campaign so far.

Edited for stupid gramarical mistake past my bed time.

3. I've never campaigned for a candidate before...
I've never sent contributions to a candidate before. I've never had a candidate's bumper sticker on my car before. I've never attended a candidate's fundraising events before.

Before what?

Before Howard Dean ran for President.

I really don't care about the "charisma" issue. I'm a pragmatist. I like where he stands on the issues.

I'd call that "motivated".

4. Minnesota...
'Sen. John Kerry raised more money from individual contributors in Minnesota than any other Democratic presidential candidate, but former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean had nearly twice as many individual contributors as Kerry, Federal Election Commission reports show.

In the three months ending June 30, Kerry, D-Mass., raised $107,660 from 129 Minnesota contributors, while Dean raised $66,000 from 248 contributors.'
