Young considering GA Senate bid, Democratic chairman says
Former Atlanta Mayor and U.N. ambassador Andrew Young is considering a bid for the U.S. Senate next year, the chairman of Georgias Democratic Party said Thursday.

I think its a serious notion on his part, said Calvin Smyre. Hes consulted with family and others. From my perspective, its a serious possibility that he will form an exploratory committee.

The party is desperately seeking a well-known candidate to succeed Democrat Zell Miller, who announced he will not seek re-election when his term expires next year. Republicans already have four potential candidates, two of them congressmen.

He is internationally known; he brings a great wealth of experience, said Smyre. He is a former congressman, former ambassador, former mayor. He knows about governance. He knows the legislative bodies.

1. He would be my #1 Candidate
He is tremendously qualified and has good name recognition in the state. I think he would be a great candidate and it would really bring out a strong African-American vote which would help the entire Democratic ticket.

3. TO: CMT...
The state has tilted to the hard right. Does he have a chance of winning after what happened in 2002???

4. my feeling is yes
for one thing I don't think the Democratic base turned out in record numbers. If Young is the nominee he would do well with African-Americans who make up a good chunk of the population. Turnout would no doubt be very strong. He is also respected by many white voters in the State. I really believe he would be an outstanding candidate and do well.

6. just remember
no candidate from Atlanta has won state wide office in Georgia for a long time!

He would be great but I don't think he'd win.

7. Marshall vs. Young
I don't know much about Young. Would he make a better candidate than Rep. Jim Marshall. If he would, it would be nice to keep Marshall in the House, making his seat much easier to retain.

10. He should run.
A great figure of the civil rights movement should run in a statewide election. We need turnout up greatly--the flag issue might not be dead, etc.
