Bush approval rating plunges 14-points since April in New Jersey
George W. Bush has a 53-43 percent approval rating in New Jersey. This is Bush's lowest approval in the state since prior to 9/11. In August, 2001 Bush had a 52% approval rating in the state. In April Bush had a 67-29 percent approval rating. The Gender Gap is wide. Men approve of Bush by a 58-38 percent margin while women are divided
48-47 percent. Union households give Bush a positive approval rating by 53-44 percent.

The news for Gov. McGreevey is even worse. He has a 35-49 percent approval rating and only 24% would like to see him re-elected. Still, by a 43-37 percent margin voters in the state would rather see a Democratic Legislature elected than a Republican one.

1. Oh, it's worse than that.
I'm from Joisey! You from Joisey? I'm from Joisey!

I don't know of too many people, around here, who are for the Chimp. I live in one of THE most repuke areas of the state, and even the repukes are getting it.

As for McGreevey, he needs to regularly remind the folks that we would not be in this fiscal woodchipper if our former governoretta had not treated the state budget like a Christmas Club for her hubby's business associates and friends.

14. Yeah Joisey!
This is good news, because if we have to fight for New Jersey in 2004 we have no shot at winning the election.

5. Whitman has been gone for 2 1/2 years
I think the people of New Jersey are starting to think that you can't blame Whitman for what is happening now just like you can't blame Clinton for the economy. McGreevey should take responsibility for his problems. Also, I don't think people care about the budget as much as they just dislike McGreevey personally.

3. This is mixed news
Bush's approval rating is now basically just like it was at the beginning of his term and New Jersey easily went to Gore in 2000. So, that is obviously extremely good. However, Jim McGreevey remains in big trouble. His appoval rating is horrible and even democrats don't really want him to be reelected. I'm hoping for a primary challenge but that may be unlikely. Also important is the legislative elections that will occur in November. It looks promising that New Jerseyans seem to want democrats in control of the legislature even though McGreevey is so unpopular.

4. New Jersey will be blue in 2004
In fact, I think Karl Rove will write it off by September, 2004, if not eariler. Good thing too, as ad time is expensive in the Garden State.

6. bush wrote off NJ in 2000.
He made a brief pit stop in Bergen county to speak to a Catholic Bishop. Perhaps to garner support for faith based initiative?

7. Unions for Bush?
I think the whole idea that unions are solidly Democratic is an old and oversold idea. Don't you think many union workers have their benefits and really don't think they're at risk of losing them? Which is why they are going Republican more and more, because taxes and community safety and order are seen as strong Republican issues?

9. nationally Gore got 62% of the Union vote in 2000
but you do have a point. I know many union members especially in the construction trades who are poltically as conservative as they come.

11. The Hicks In The Sticks Might Vote For Chimpy
But they have nothing on the urban sector, if Blacks decide to vote against Trent Lott's bestest buddy.

BTW - Who actually says "Joisey" except Kean? What part is that accent from? I have a pretty thick North Jersey accent, but I don't know anyone who tawks like dat.

16. Only Hudson County
Some people in Hudson County talk like that, I think. The accents seems to be particulary strong in Bayonne. Still, I think hardly anyone really has a joisey accent. Most people just talk with a mainstream american accent like anchors on national television talk.

12. McGreevey
Lousy approval ratings for Democratic New Jersey governors is nothing new. Dick Hughes, Brendan Byrne and Jim Florio all had lousy approval numbers during their first term. The first two went on to be reelected easily while Florio, who was much more unpopular than McGreevey, came within 1% of reelection.

As long as the Republicans put up lousy candidates, McGreevey has a good shot at re-election.

BTW, Tom Kean said Jeerrrsey.

Another Jerseyite.

13. Well
that means Bush's chances of carrying the state next year are falling. By next year the Democrat should be ahead there. However, if Bush is leading in NJ this time next year, then we are in serious trouble.

does anybody noticed how the pollsters aren't asking the "re-elect" question in Democratic trending states?
