John Kerry sez....
"If you're a $40,000 income earner, Howard Dean's going to raise your taxes more than 20 times," (MTP)

Anyone care to explain the numbers behind this bullshit?

...or is John using numbers supplied by te Rove group?

1. I was curious too
since I fall into that category and didn't receive any of *'s tax cuts (although my state taxes soared).

3. From the John Kerry blog
Kerry was wrong. Dean actually would raise taxes by *MORE* than 20 times.

try it:

http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/common/taxcut2003.asp

enter $40,000 for adjusted gross income

select married filing jointly

enter 4 personal exemptions

zero dividend and capital gains income

two children under 17

Estimated 2003 tax bill before tax cut: $1,178
Estimated 2003 tax bill after tax cut: $45

thats 26 times more taxes after Dean rolls back middle class tax cuts.

4. How do you get four exemptions for two kids?
My brain is a bit lazy today.

5. I get it now
You've got to be a married with 2 young kids filing jointly zero dividend and capital gains earner to benefit from Kerry.

I'll stick with Dean though, since I don't fit into Kerry's income box. Actually, if I did fit into the box I'd still stick with Dean, because my state taxes went up more than the rebate I'd get under Kerry's plan. I'd prefer a federal balanced budget (I have this thing about paying interest...eeeew!) and hope there is help for my state to recover from the mess Bush left us so my state and local taxes are alleviated.

6. I'm looking now where the 2 extra exemptions come from
Usually married couples just add an exemption per child.

10. It's nice to be selective...and makes for good rhetoric.
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 12:12 PM by sfecap
Run it with no kids and married...

Run it with a single person...

Married, no children: $3,292 / $2,960

Single: $4,986 / $4,860

Or, how about married and one child? $2,235 / $1,502

So...the quote is inaccurate and simply political spin. Some taxpayers will see that, most won't.

Ask those taxpayers if they would rather have health insurance or their "tax cut"....

11. Isn't that one of the cuts to be lost in 2005 anyway?
Or maybe 2008? Some of the cuts are due to disappear in 05 and 08 regardless of who gets elected. I thought this was one of them. Anyone know?
