Howard Dean: Anti War?

"Only in 2003 could a 5'8" politician named Howard be considered a favorite for a major party's Presidential nomination. Yet that is exactly what has happened with former Vermont Governor Dean. His supporters point to his strong showing in the recent "MoveOn.Org Presidential Preference Primary" as well as to the surprising strength in his campaign's fundraising as evidence that Dean is viable."

1. Dean has
never said he was "anti-war"

He HAS said that he was against the IRAQ war.

See the difference?

Oh, and when are you going to stop smearing, recycling dated attack pieces, and hold true to your recent attempt to be "positive" -- or is that just too much work for you?

But think of it this way. They attack Dean because they have to. He is the one they are talking about.

12. They attack Dean because
Dean chose to attack the other candidates back in January. He attacked for two months with no reciprocation and no journalist examining his attacks for their inaccuracies.

You reap what you sow. Dean felt that he HAD to attack to make himself known, well, now he has to deal with becoming known.

15. Fear and Anger
They see the writing on the wall. They know their candidates are completely unviable.

They fear change.

4. Shades of deceit ....
Dean, like MANY other good americans, saw the Bush team's push for war as belligerent and reckless ... He DIDNT reject the possibility that, after a STRICT UN sponsored inspection regime had been exhausted by Iraqi intrasingence, that the US, along with the GREATER PART of the international community, through UN auspices, would commit to military action to evict Saddam Hussein and overthrow the Baathist regime in Iraq ....

The issue isnt THAT Saddam was overthrown, (which is a good thing), but HOW the case for war was formed, and the actions of this administration to overstate that case .....

War is sometimes necessary in a crazy and brutal world: ... ANY man who has read a LICK of history knows this: ... but the justice of such a war MUST be accurately and honestly pronounced, and supported by FACTS ....

The truth is: ... The UN regime was effective, and would have remained effective, if allowed to continue .... perhaps with renewed vigilence and US oversight ....

Dean isnt 'Anti war', nor is he 'weak on defense' .... he is 'ANTI Bush Lies', and the GOP will misstate his position to paint a false and unflattering image of Dean, ... as is their want ....

This is what they do to everyone: .... create strawman of those who disagreed with Bush by calling them 'weak' ..... even if they arent .....

20. But then, his actual position
isn't much different than Kerry's. Yet Kerry is told to shut up because he voted for a resolution that was quite similar to Dean's position, as noted in Dean's support flast fall or the Biden-Lugar version of the Iraq resolution.

In fact, if B-L had passed last fall, then Dean would be lumped in with Kerry, Edwards, Gep, et al, here on DU he would be called a warmonger.

Let's see what antiwar.com has to say about General Clark, shall we?

http://www.antiwar.com/justin/diaries/diary18.html

Oooooooh, that smarts:

THE SUPREME LIAR

NATO's initial response was to lie: the "Supreme Commander," Wesley Clark, told reporters for Bloomberg News Service that the Serbs were responsible for the killings, and that after a NATO sortie had bombed a Serbian military convoy the Serbs had responded by killing the Kosovars -- and that video from the NATO warplanes would soon confirm this story. No such video ever turned up, however, and within hours NATO was backtracking.

.....

While the cockpit video of the airstrike against the train was not available to reporters at the briefing -- "it's hung up on a computer problem in my computer at SHAPE" -- Clark said "but I want to describe it, because this is a case where a pilot was assigned to strike a railroad bridge that is part of the integrated communications supply network in Serbia." Note how the corruption of the English language into bureaucratese enables Clark to obfuscate what he is really saying. No ordinary person would describe a mid-afternoon passenger train filled with civilians as "part of" something called "the integrated communications supply network of Serbia." Using words like "network" and "supply," the NATO-crats are saying that practically everything in Yugoslavia is a legitimate target. How long before they start calling baby carriages "part of the coordinated population transfer grid"?

APOLOGIST-IN-CHIEF

The Supreme Commander continued: "He launched his missile from his aircraft. It was many miles away. He was not able to put his eyes on the bridge. It was a remotely directed attack." Okay, so he couldn't see his target, and everything was done according to a prearranged plan: lock into the target and fire. But then Clark abruptly switches gears: "And as he stared intently at the desired target point on the bridge . . . and worked it and worked it and worked it, all of a sudden, at the very last instance, with less than a second to go, he caught a flash of movement that came into the screen, and it was the train coming." Hey, wait a minute: If the pilot couldn't see his target, then what was he staring at so intently? Furthermore, with all the sophisticated technology packed into those warplanes, is it really true that a large passenger train is both invisible and undetectable? Clark claims that "he couldn't dump the bomb at that point. It was locked ." But if it was already locked, then the pilot made a decision -- or had orders -- to lock on to his target before he could really see what he was hitting. This is hardly going to "extraordinary lengths" to avoid civilian casualties. Clark goes on to say that "it was an unfortunate incident which he and the crew and all of us very much regret," but what Clark may come to regret most of all is his role as apologist-in-chief for NATO's Balkan debacle.

There's more:

Sooooo, voteclark...are you SURE you want to "go there" when it comes to digging up dirt on Dean from the left?

In fact, not ONE of the candidates is acceptable to Antiwar.com or to CounterPunch.org

and from a policy standpoint or from a political history standpoint, not ONE of the candidates is acceptable to a progressive or to a leftist (like me)...

7. Whoa...
Voteclark sez:

He is Pro-Choice
He is for local control of gun laws
He is for a balanced budget

He is similar to Kerry, Dean, and Kucinich on the issues.

So if he is similar to the above, why do you spend so much effort chasing down opinions and articles - often those at the extreme fringe of left or right - bashing Dean?

You're weird.

16. MIS-Leading

Dean is not for "Local Gun Control". He is for NO Federal controls.

Nice spin. As far as the local control spin job, Dean would take NO Position concerning “local control” of guns as President. This is clearly a tap-dance move.

Dean is good on taxes, budget, health care and education, BUT…he worries me on his death penalty stand, environment, agriculture and his gig on the war also has been a head scratcher.

He supports all the current gun laws plus closing the gun show loophole.

11. Any reference to Dean's height makes one wonder what this type of
personality truly believes about race, gender, age, etc. etc. Height bias appears a throw back to the cave man era. Those who focus on height seem to be 'physically' fixated not 'mentally' aware.

Dean '04..

13. Good article
He has a reason for being anti-Palestinean. His wife is Jewish and he may be suporting her.

The part the article doesn't mention is that he only wanted to postpone the war. Look back at his past speeches.

18. Well, It May Be A Legitimate, If Politically Incorrect, Point
Dean may very well have been influenced by his wife. My wife is from Brazil, and it has made me particularly sympathetic to that country. Dean also visited Israel. It seems from his descriptions that he was only given the Israeli perspective, or at least that's all he came away with. It certainly doesn't seem like he's witnessed Palestinian homes being demolished to put up Israeli highways.

I don't find this to be anti-Semitic, personally - a term I think that is thrown around too lightly in reference to Israel under Likud party control.

21. wouldnt call it anti semtic either but doc funk you explained it good
me on I/P netural but if I was to lean it would be Palestinan not Israeli, in Northern Ireland however I am a big supporter of the nationalists, and while I oppose the IRA's general tactics the side of the nationalists is preferable and more just in ideals and justifaction.

That would be like saying that a candidate only cared about some country in Africa because his wife was black.
