Dan Maes, GOP Candidate for Governor in Colorado, Failed to Mention Bankruptcy Filing in 1989
GOP Dan Maes running for governor in Colorado neglected to mention his personal bankruptcy 20 years ago. The $17,500 fine for campaign finance violations hasn't helped his credibility. Where do they dig up these candidates?

GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes, who has touted his business experience running telecommunications and credit reporting companies, says he filed personal bankruptcy 20 years ago.

According to The Denver Post, Maes filed bankruptcy in 1989 when he was 29 years old and single. Maes spokesman Nate Strauch says Maes has no plans to drop out of the race. He refused to answer any other questions.

Strauch did not return phone calls Saturday night seeking comment and Maes did not answer his phone.

Maes has lost support from a number of Republicans, including former U.S. Sen. Hank Brown, who cited character issues.

1. So when they get caught
They simply refuse to answer any questions and then only speak through Fox.

If this weren't about our FUTURE, it would almost be comical.

2. Mr. Maes should've taken a cue from Harold Hughes
This story with Mr. Maes made me think of Harold Hughes - one of Iowa's better Governors - was an alcoholic who described himself as "a college drop-out, a drunk with a jail record."

After nearly committing suicide in the early 1950s Hughes turned his life around, eventually becoming Governor and then a US Senator. In the 1964 campaign his Republican opponent tried to make an issue out of a 1954 relapse. Hughes didn't equivocate or deny what had happened. He came right out and said "I am an alcoholic and will be until the day I die... But with God’s help I’ll never touch a drop of alcohol again. Now, can we talk about the issues of this campaign?"

Maybe Maes should have taken a cue from Hughes here.
