How do you run for a Republican nomination when the state Republican Party has already endorsed your opponent?

If you're Tom Ganley, the Northeast Ohio auto dealer who wants to be a United States senator, you run to the right. And that's exactly what Ganley is doing as he tries to take on Rob Portman, the former congressman and Bush White House hand who is regarded by his party and the media as having the nomination locked down.

Ganley has loaned his campaign more than $100,000, Federal Election Commission records show, and has been visiting tea parties, anti-czarists and the kinds of conservatives who think that even Jean Schmidt is too darn liberal.

Today, Ganley got the seal of approval of Bay Buchanan, the conservative activist, talk show regular, former United States treasurer (under President Ronald Reagan) and chairman of her brother Pat's presidential campaigns. Ganley and Buchanan both believe that the United States needs to do more to crack down on illegal immigrants, according to a Ganley spokesman...
