WASHINGTON -- Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich has nearly five times as much campaign money in the bank as his Republican challenger going into the final stretch before the election, according to reports filed today at the Federal Election Commission.

Kucinich raised $359,688 in the year's third quarter for his re-election bid, compared with $105,119 for Jim Trakas of Independence, a former state representative who once chaired Cuyahoga County's Republican party.

ENDORSEMENT

District 24 includes includes Bay Village, Bentleyville, Berea, Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Chagrin Falls, Chagrin Falls Township, Fairview Park, Glenwillow, Hunting Valley, Independence, Lyndhurst, Moreland Hills, North Olmsted, North Royalton, Oakwood, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, Pepper Pike, Rocky River, Seven Hills, Solon, Strongsville, Valley View, Walton Hills, Westlake and part of Mayfield Heights.

THE CANDIDATES:

Gary J. Kucinich, 57, is sales manager at a Cleveland-area automobile dealer. Appointed by the Democratic Party as its nominee in this contest, Kucinich has been a member of the Cleveland City Council and the Cleveland school board. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from Cleveland State University.
Patton
Thomas F. Patton, 54, a Republican, has worked as a marketing consultant and a labor union official. He is completing his third term in the Ohio House. Patton attended Cleveland State University.

OUR VIEW:
This contest is for the Ohio Senate seat held by Bob Spada, who could not seek re-election because of term limits. Patton may not be a superstar, but he is personable, steady and has a relentless focus on economic-development issues. Kucinich is a frequent candidate for any office available. Like Patton, he is likable, but offers little more than the same tired rants against utilities, banks and businesses. Patton's election should be an easy call for the voters.

1. I just knew he'd do well
Kucinich could win on his integrity alone. A true hero of the senate!
