NYT, MARCH 1992: TSONGAS ABANDONS CAMPAIGN, LEAVING CLINTON A CLEAR PATH TOWARD SHOWDOWN WITH BUSH
Just sayin', WJC had it locked up in March, not June.

THE 1992 CAMPAIGN: Primaries; TSONGAS ABANDONS CAMPAIGN, LEAVING CLINTON A CLEAR PATH TOWARD SHOWDOWN WITH BUSH

By ROBIN TONER,
Published: March 20, 1992

Former Senator Paul E. Tsongas of Massachusetts withdrew from the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination today, a decision that many in his party said all but insured the selection of Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas.

Mr. Tsongas announced his departure at a news conference in Boston, where he said his campaign did not have enough money to continue. His move leaves only former Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. of California to compete with Mr. Clinton in the remaining primaries and caucuses in 21 states.

Without adequate money to win, Mr. Tsongas said, "the alternative was to play the role of spoiler."

'That Is Not Worthy'

"That is not what I'm about," he continued. "That is not worthy. I did not survive my ordeals in order to be the agent of the re-election of George Bush."

4. I've always said the story about Bill not clinching the nomination till June was misleading
As the contemporary article proves, he had the "math" to win the nomination as early as March, when Tsongas bowed out. The fact that back then a big state like California, whose delegates are needed to put one over the top, did not occur till June is mere formailty.

California moved up to February this year.

So both of the statements she made today were suspect. One was misleading, the other plain creepy.

9. Bill Clinton didn't have the majority of the delegates until June, 1992
The article reads "all but insures the selection". It does not say that he won the nomination at that time, He didn't.

Hillary said that her husband hadn't "locked up" the nomination until June. That means "have a majority of the delegates." Bill Clinton didn't win a majority of the delegates in 1992 until June when Calif voted.

I worked on the Jerry Brown campaign in Calif in 1992. I remember it well.

10. oh, snap!
Babylonsister, that was a phenomenal catch. Fantastic work.

Regarding the comments Hillary made about RFK's assassination, is MSNBC the only tv outlet commenting on the appearance that she is staying in the race just in case something "happens" to Obama or is this a theme other stations/media outlets are commenting on as well?
