Indiana nuns lacking ID denied at poll by fellow sister
Indiana nuns lacking ID denied at poll by fellow sister

By DEBORAH HASTINGS – 23 minutes ago

About 12 Indiana nuns were turned away Tuesday from a polling place by a fellow bride of Christ because they didn't have state or federal identification bearing a photograph.

Sister Julie McGuire said she was forced to turn away her fellow sisters at Saint Mary's Convent in South Bend, across the street from the University of Notre Dame, because they had been told earlier that they would need such an ID to vote.

The nuns, all in their 80s or 90s, didn't get one but came to the precinct anyway.

"One came down this morning, and she was 98, and she said, 'I don't want to go do that,'" Sister McGuire said. Some showed up with outdated passports. None of them drives.

They weren't given provisional ballots because it would be impossible to get them to a motor vehicle branch and back in the 10-day time frame allotted by the law, Sister McGuire said. "You have to remember that some of these ladies don't walk well. They're in wheelchairs or on walkers or electric carts."

12. So they can hang their heads in shame and see what their decision really impacts
Scalia is a devout Catholic, maybe it will give him pause.

7. Well damnit...
I have been willing to support this law in order to stamp out the rupublicon "issue" of voter fraud, and the seemingly good idea to protect our voting rights, BUT:

Why in the world didn't someone get these ladies down to a license branch for their FREE ID's??

I was concerned about this a few weeks ago and called my local retirement home, they told me they were providing free shuttling with their facility vans for all their residents, and that many of them had already taken a trip to the BMV.

I wish someone would have helped these ladies...

Basically, the nun who turned her fellow nuns away knew they were coming before they came and the dozen nuns knew they would be turned away do to lack of IDs.

The purpose was to bring to people's attention the difficulty some people will have to get IDs. A dozen nuns being denied the right to vote should get someone's attention, and hopefully they do this EVERY ELECTION till some sort of solution is provided i.e. an outreach program to provide IDs or maybe an undoing of this statute.
