Edwards to star at S.C. Democratic convention
Stumping for others keeps murmur going about veep spot

Sen. John Edwards plans to return to South Carolina on May 1 to give the keynote address at the Democrats' state convention. It was the Palmetto State that gave S.C. native Edwards his only victory as a presidential candidate.
North Carolina's senior senator has also harkened back to his run for the White House to come up with a new name for his political action committee. What used to be the "New American Optimists" PAC is now the "One America Committee" -- an allusion to Edwards' famously effective campaign stump speech, in which he said the country was really "Two Americas," one for the rich and well-connected, the other for the have-nots who struggle every day.
The PAC will collect money to pay for Edwards' campaign trips and for contributions to 2004 candidates -- including Inez Tenenbaum, S.C. Democrats' probable nominee in the contest to succeed Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C. Now a star -- and a big draw -- in the Democratic Party, Edwards is also hoping to help Tenenbaum raise some campaign cash during his S.C. trip next month. (No word yet on if and when he'll do the same for Erskine Bowles, N.C. Democrats' choice to run for the Senate seat Edwards is vacating.)
While Edwards stumps for others, a growing chorus of politicians and pundits is talking up his pluses as a potential running mate for Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the Democrats' presidential nominee-to-be.
