Obama urges supporters to let Ryan divorce issue rest
Obama urges supporters to let Ryan divorce issue rest

CHICAGO - U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama said Friday that his opponent's sealed divorce papers should not be an issue in the campaign and that his supporters shouldn't make it one.

Questions about Jack Ryan's divorce from actress Jeri Ryan arose just days before the Illinois Republican primary when some of Ryan's opponents suggested the papers might contain damaging material.

Ryan, a former investment banker-turned-teacher, insists the record are sealed to preserve the privacy of his son.

Obama, the Democratic nominee, has said he would not bring up the divorce in the campaign, but the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has kept the issue alive by distributing e-mails with copies of news stories about the records.

2. My sources say
that in the records are allegations that Jack "Mr. Republican Family Values Guy" Ryan tried to get his ex-wife to engage in a three-way with another woman, and she refused. Query: is this fair game in a Senate race? I say, BRING IT ON, baby.

There is no shot in hell that Ryan will be elected to the U.S. Senate...or at least I hope.

6. Obama is taking the moral high ground
yet the issue is still there and will still hurt Ryan. So it doubly helps Obama.

7. Five years ago Dems whined about the politics of personal destruction

I think Obama should take the high ground in this. He has a legislative record to be proud of and can beat Ryan without lowball tactics.
Use your opposition research to find out everything you can, of course, and save it as a fail-safe option. It's Obama's tactical nuke. If Ryan uncovers something on Obama, he'll think twice about using it knowing Obama still has that divorce in his hand.
