Do Dems have anyone to replace Gephardt (MO)?
We can not afford to lose any seats. He's retiring right?

1. We should be able to keep MO-3
There's a lot of candidates on both sides. The only name I recognized was Russ Carnahan, who's currently in the MO legislature.

2. OK, cool
Carnahan should win hands down.

3. Yes, eight Dems are running
Joan Barry, Russ Carnahan, Mike Evans, Mario Favazza, Corey Mohn, Jeff Smith, Mark Smith, and Steve Stoll. The Republicans have three people running, Bill Federer, Jay Kanzler Jr, and Joan McGivney.

This seat is, iirc, reliably Democratic, so there's not much to worry about.

6. I dunno, Jeff Smith sounds promising.
(Can we call him Mr. Smith?)

4. Is Russ Carnahan Senator Carnahan's son??
You all know the story of the Senator.. I rate him the best Governor Missouri ever had, and would have been a long career in the Senate were it not the plane crash.

5. Well actually, Mrs. Carnahan was the Senator
Her husband was lost to us in the crash 3 weeks before he beat Ashcroft in the election.

Makes Dan Fielding on "Night Court" and John Ashcroft the only two to lose an election to a dead person.

8. It happens more often than you think
Here in PA a few years ago we had a Borough Councilwoman die a few day before the election. She was reelected, defeating her living opponent.

7. Yeah
Apparently, St. Senator Steve Stoll, who is anti-choice and kind of conservative, is the favorite. He has picked up support from the county committees and from labor unions and has raised plenty the most money, I believe.

St. Rep. Russ Carnahan is also running and, as the son of former Governor Mel Carnahan and former Senator Jean Carnanhan, he should be competitive. However, some say he isn't a very good candidate and did very badly in the debate. He just isn't nearly as strong as his parents.

Jeff Smith, a professor, is the most liberal serious candidate but he may be too liberal for what seems like a socially conservative area and he doesn't have as much experience as the others. He has raised a surprisingly large amount of money, but apparently if you look at the details it isn't that much.

Finally, the only other serious candiate appear to be ex-st. rep Joan Barry. I haven't hear much about her but she seems to be in the running. I would guess that she will get a decent amount of votes but probably won't win.

9. MO-3 is a 'ham sandwich Democrat' district.
It'll stay Dem.
