Young political junkies hear tips on campaigning
Young political junkies hear tips on campaigning

Sunday, February 01, 2004

By Len Barcousky, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The man who directed Jim Roddey's two campaigns for Allegheny County chief executive looked out at the 60 people who had gathered yesterday for a daylong workshop on running for office.

"You people are not normal," Kent Gates reminded them.

All had gotten up early on a bitterly cold Saturday to learn the nuts-and-bolts skills needed to launch political campaigns. Among the general population, he said, few people will think about election contests until just a few weeks before the vote.

So if you mail campaign literature for the November election, don't send it in August, he advised. Send it in October, and mail two or three pieces to reinforce your message and help voters remember your name.

If you ever considered running for office, this article has a common rules campaigns use.

Enjoy!
