Kucinich: I Will Close School of Americas
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 21, 2003

Over the next three days, thousands are expected to protest the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga. (The school has been renamed Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.)

Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich today released the following statement:

"I stand against terror and violence and in solidarity with the victims of the School of the Americas graduates. I support nonviolent demonstration against the SOA. The United States' ability to persuade other nations to investigate terrorism will be strengthened by the closing of a US school that has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers to wage war against their own people, against union organizers, religious workers, teachers, and student leaders. As president I will close the School of the Americas."

Rev. Roy Bourgeois, MM, Founder of SOA WATCH and Dennis Kucinich endorser, said:

"Today our world is filled with violence and people are looking for hope. I am supporting Dennis Kucinich for President because he is the person who can bring more peace and justice in our country and in our world. These are challenging times and Dennis Kucinich has the wisdom, integrity, vision and courage to give us the hope our country is seeking today."

5. Is Kucinich the only candidate to take a position on this?
SOA is a vile misrepresentation of what America should be doing.

You know, we should have a School of America, but not this terrorist training institution, but something that trains people to truly bring about democratic ideals. Forget the Dept. of Peace, create a School of Peace to train non-violent resistence.

7. Well...
Pity he doesn't have a chance in hell...Which might actually be a good thing as he wouldn't have the slightest chance to beat Bush, even AFTER he overcomes incredible odds to win the nomination in the first place

9. "doesn't have a chance in hell"?
How many voters are there who have integrity and humane values? How many who walk their talk? That's the measure of his chances.

Nothing will improve until we grasp the nettle and repudiate the rightwingers and sellouts. All it takes on our part is integrity: walking our talk.

(Have you ever noticed how many low # posters come in & trash Kucinich ( & others too) and never give any information about themselves? I know its optional...but how easy to jump in and throw stones and then run away before anyone catches your name....

Just an observation.....

12. Since you are a Union Yes person, you should LUV Kucinich.
He walks the walk with labor, not just talks the talk.

The School of the Americas is still the same sleazy torture-training facility and democracy-killing school it always was, just prettied up.

DK would probably pardon all those nuns and priests now in jail for trespassing and defacing government property(by throwing blood on a sign.)

13. Darn right he should love DK
...since DK is the only card-carrying UNION MEMBER in the race.

Closing the SOA is just icing on the cake. And I sure as hell don't see any other candidates even ACKNOWLEDGING the role the SOA has played in political instability in South America, let alone talking about it.

14. Thanks for an excellent post goodhue!
Father Roy knows better than anyone the misadventures of our "Corporate Military Empire!" He barely excaped with his life from SOA graduates in Latin America. Thus, he started his campaign to close the school!

What it comes down to is, what are we Americans going to choose? Will we choose a President who wants to keep the Empire going, or will we choose a President who is going to make a commitment for creating peace in the world?

Our only "intelligent" choice is Dennis Kucinich!

As another DU member here says frequently, this may be our last chance - to stop the Empire! If we elect "another Emperor", we will be sending our nation in the direction of the overextended Roman Empire with the same fate!
