5. Turnabout isn't fair play?
Dean can call Kerry "Bushlite" for 7 months, even though Kerry's record is way to Dean's left, and that's fine with Dean supporters. Kerry, not mentioning Dean's name says that real Democrats are FOR the working man getting a taxbreak and cancelling the taxbreak for the rich, and you are upset he's picking on Dean? Didn't Dean insinuate that HE was from the Dem wing of the party and that the others were from the GOP wing?

And if you think for one second that centrist Dean would NOT have voted for the Patriot act, when liberals Kennedy, Wellstone, Durbin, Harkin et al did, then you don't know your candidate and his record.

21. I'd argue that Dems voted "aye" for purely self-serving reasons
...saving their collective political asses would be the biggest of those reasons. I really don't think they did so on principle.

Therefore, yes, I do think that Dean would have voted "no". I don't see Dean making a lot of politically safe decisions. I see him voting his beliefs.

26. Voting With Conviction Is Crucial
I also believe that Dean would have voted No, and felt it was the best choice. It wouldn't be like he was against disarmament (although he didn't mention it at the time). Or that he wanted the Bush administration to circumvent Congress with 10 year old resolutions. He would have voted with his heart. You can't ask for much more (unless you happen to have Trent Lott's heart).

Many Democrats in leadership positions voted out of expediency. In the bottom of my heart, though, I believe Kerry voted his convictions.

“The threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but as I said, it is not new...He has had a free hand for 4 years to reconstitute these weapons, allowing the world, during the interval, to lose the focus we had on weapons of mass destruction and the issue of proliferation.” - Sen. John Kerry, Congressional Record, 10/9/02

“It is imperative for us as a nation to stand our ground and for the western world to make clear that we cannot abide by any nation breaking out, so to speak, with respect to the capacity to possess and use those kinds of weapons." - Sen. John Kerry, Press Conference, 2/23/98

"While we should always seek to take significant international actions on a multilateral rather than a unilateral basis whenever that is possible, if...we face what we truly believe to be a grave threat to the well-being of our Nation or the entire world and it cannot be removed peacefully, we must have the courage to do what we believe is right and wise." - Sen. John Kerry, Congressional Record, 11/9/97

Weren't you around for the 2002 elections?

Don't you remember what happened?

The Democratic Party is in trouble and it is the fault of its leadership which is corrupt and cowardly.

Are you people trying to defend the same leaders who signed the Iraq resolution and the Patriot Act?

The Democratic Party has no idea what it stands for anymore. No vision. No values. No morals. And it is the fault of the leadership. They think that if they refrain from criticizing Bush they will win elections.

Guess what - that strategy lost us the 2002 election. And now the same leaders, including John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, Terry McAuliffe, Dick Gephardt and Tom Daschle want to use it again.

The DLC attacks anyone who criticizes Bush because they are afraid of Bush.

Make no mistake, there is a huge problem with the Democratic Party and there is only one person who can fix it.

Howard Dean 2004.

16. Friggin' Hypocrites
I'm not happy that Kerry is taking this stance, but to hear the Democratic wing of this forum bitch about it is the ultimate irony.

You can dish it, but you can't take it.

PS - It is not even ironic that you are trying to turn a debate about taxes and health care into a debate about the Patriot Act and the Iraq vote. One note wonders - what are you guys going to do in the general elections? Even Dean admits there are other issues out there.

Just completely omit what Dean said.

All Kerry said was real Democrats were in Congress working hard during the Clinton years creating jobs, a surplus, etc. That's all he said. He was NOT insinuating Dean wasn't a real Democrat. Rather, he was rebutting Dean's claim that Dean is the ONLY real Democrat.

Jeez.

24. Real Democrats DON'T harm the middle class....period
Howard Dean calls for the repeal of ALL of the tax cuts in 2001 and 2003; which is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard.

Even Dennis Kucinich doesn't call for that!

There's a little thing called the Earned Income Tax Credit that helps predominatly poor people and thats why poor people making under $15,000 got rebate checks in 2001 and SHOULD have gotten in 2003 and will if the House passes a decent version.

Repealing the tax cuts wouldnt hurt me one Iota. They didnt help me much at all when they hapened. I would way rather have universal health care than the couple hundred bucks I got from the tax cuts

25. BRAVO BLM!!!
Any attack against Kerry for calling Dean a fake Democrat is easily countered by Dean's completely misleading and unjust self-label as representing the "Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party." This stoked images of Paul Wellstone, a revered man FAR to the left of him. All this helped the image of the uber-liberal Dean, since the first thing people would hear about him would be, "anti-war, civil unions, and Wellstone." That was the first impression I got from him, and I was pretty shocked to find out how easily debunked that image was.

Paul Wellstone voted for the Patriot Act? Then how can you blame Kerry and the majority of the Dems for doing so to? Is Wellstone a coward as well?

27. Wellstone Voted For The Patriot Act?
Then the blood of every man wrongly detained, every illegal search and seizure, and every library record scanned is squarely on this un-American bastard's hands. He is responsible for every excess that Ashcroft took with the law, because by voting for it he was giving Ashcroft total and complete sanction.

I would never be able to vote for this man. His record may be very liberal, and he may have disagreed with the ends, but he gave free reign to whatever means the Bush administration had in mind. All for a little political expediency - just to cover his ass. This pro-violation of civil liberties Senator is a two-faced coward.

Even if he disagreed whole-heartedly with everything the administration did, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that vote. The vote is everything. What a slimeball.
