That's how it's been all across South Carolina this fall as the pack of 2004 Democratic presidential hopefuls has stepped up their campaign visits to the state in the run-up to the Feb. 3 primary.

With only the rare exception, their audiences have been small -- rarely over 100 people -- and made up almost exclusively of committed party activists.
Only the insurgent campaign of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has brought out a large number of people previously uninvolved in politics, most of them technologically savvy enough to do much of their organizing via the Internet. More than 300 turned out to greet Dean in Columbia a week ago.
