Sen. Breaux to announce his intentions today
Here's the link:

Hopefully Breaux will run. He's unbeatable in Louisiana and will bring out the vote in a state that we could win in the 2004 presidential race. He is a moderate (as will be Chris John, who is the best candidate to replace him), but he's no Zell Miller.

1. WWLTV (New Orleans) reports Breaux will retire.
I'll look for the AP source...

2. Breaux to retire
Hopefully he'll be able to help Rep. Chris John get elected.

3. he really helped out Landrieu
so he should be a tremendous help to John, who comes from the same town as Breaux. I think that Rep. John should be able to win this, unless there is a major scandal.

4. a filibuster proof senate?
it seems we may be headed that way - 5 southern senators out with only Illinois and (maybe) Alaska has potential pick-ups for the Dems ... and although time will tell, its hard to see Dean providing a lot of coattails to southern senate candidates who will likely have to run away from their presidential nominee. Not good times ...

6. Interesting you assume having to "run away" from Dean...
When another article has been posted here today from North Carolina, that Dean is the only one of the candidates who is pulling in support from outside the Democratic Party.

Basically, it sounds like Southern congressional candidates would have to run away from any presidential nominee but Dean. If this is not the case, I would be happy to look at articles and/or polls that prove otherwise.

5. But even so, John is more conservative than Breaux
and given Breaux's voting record, that's saying something.
